Cannes Diary

Entry One: Monday, May 13, 2002  --  Page Two

Itís around this point that Iíve decided that there is no chance in hell that Iím going to run into any Penn students randomly here. It certainly would have been nice to see a familiar face just to reassure myself that Iím not alone feeling completely disoriented in such a surreal experience. Right then, right on cue, I see Lindsay and Beth sitting on a bench in the park. I head over to them and they are just as surprised to see me as I them. They seem equally overwhelmed by being here, so we decide to walk around together to try and find a place for dinner. We stop by numerous restaurants, ranging rather dramatically in price, before finally settling at Chez Freddy, a relatively small cafť on a long stretch of them right off one of the main roads in Cannes. The meal is good (including a 3,50 euro can of soda--I learn quickly that I will certainly not be ordering much soda while on this trip) and is a nice start to my incredibly erratic selection of meals while at the Festival. At this point, Lindsay and Beth decide to head back to their rooms, so I make my back to lovely rue du Pre where, on the way, I continue to surprise myself by running into more Penn people, this time Shreevar, Lauren, and Kristen (who are also with the daughter of one of the families weíre staying with). We circulate for a little while before Shreevar and I head off on our own, checking out the beaches and getting the lay of the land. Its dusk at this point and we pick up Dan at his house and (after sharing a drink with the rather eccentric bachelor Dan lives with) decide to get some dessert somewhere. Itís a balmy and comfortable night, just right for a nice walk around the city. As I would discover, this weather would stay with us almost every single day of our time here.

Itís been an extremely long day at this point (London to Luton to Nice to Cannes isnít the lightest way to spend a day), so we disperse and I head back to my room to get some sleep before another long day begins. I get all of my stuff put away and pass out quickly, eager for the Festival to get into high gear.
